[Left Flap] Even when the gods
Held sway in the ancient days,
I have never heard
That water gleamed with autumn red
As it does in Tatta's stream
[Back Cover]
[Right Flap] Chihayafuru is a serialized work. I can't explain in words how fun and enjoyable it is to write a serialized manga. I hope you can understand through the manga itself. Let's start!
[Main Body] Chihaya, a sixth-grader, met Arata, a transfer student from Fukui. Arata was a quiet boy, but he had an unusual gift: competitive karuta. Chihaya felt inspired by Arata's ability to take cards faster and with more concentration than anyone else. However, what Arata couldn't take his eyes from was Chihaya's extraordinary talent.

The curtain finally raises on this story of youth, where ever more dazzling and wholehearted feelings intersect!!

Taichi: Chihaya,
you shouldn't get involved with him.
[012-2]
Taichi: I heard he eats bugs.
Someone from Class 2 saw him.

SOUND WSHH WSHH
[019-5]
Arata: You can't call that a dream.
Chihaya: Huh?
[019-6]
Arata: If it's not for yourself, it's not a dream.
[020-1]
Arata: You can't latch on to someone else's.
It's too sad for your sister.

Our school has a tournament every year.

[021-1]
Arata: . . .

[021-4]
Chihaya: Why is he so enthusiastic?
Let's see. . .how does this go?
You put 25 cards into three rows. . .
[021-5]
Chihaya: There are one hundred poems, made up of an upper and lower phrase.
You line up the cards, which just have the lower phrase.
[021-6]
Chihaya: When the upper phrase is read, you take the corresponding lower phrase.
I only remember about 50 of them.
SOUND GLANCE
Chihaya: Well, it's just karuta. . .
[021-7]
Chihaya: That's all. . .
[023-1]

I want to get at least one card.
[025-4]
Chihaya: I know the upper phrase for that card.
It's “Se wo hayami
Iwa ni sekaruru
Takigawa no.”

(Though a swift stream is
Divided by a boulder
In its headlong flow)
[025-5]

Arata: But you took a card.
Chihaya: A single card, I was completely defeated!
[026-6]
Arata: But. . .
I. . .
It was fun!
[027-1]
Arata: Almost everyone in Fukui plays karuta.
But it's not like that in Tokyo.
[027-2]
Arata: I've been playing by myself. . .
Chihaya: By yourself?
Listening to tapes?
[027-4]
Arata: People in other countries don't really play karuta. . .
I mean, it's a hard game.
But that means. . .
[027-5]
Arata: If you become best in Japan,
that means you're best in the world, right?
[028-1]
Arata: My dream
is to become a karuta Master.
[028-2]
Chihaya: A Master?
Best in the world?
[028-3]
Chihaya: His dream. . .
[028-4]
Arata: Chihaya. . .
That's a good name.
Chihaya: Eh?
Arata: Look.
[029-1]
Arata: You can take this card when you hear “Chihaya” from the upper phrase.
I can already see it as “Chihaya.”
[029-2]
Arata: That's how it looks to me.

Arata: . . .
[044-7]
Chihaya: No. . .
~Arata: If it's not for yourself, it's not a dream.
Chihaya: No.
I'm not playing for him.
[045-1]
Chihaya: I'm going to
[045-2]
Chihaya: beat Taichi!
Taichi: . . .
[045-3]
Girl: But doesn't Chihaya only know the poems that start with “A” and “N”?
Girl 2: She knows about half. . .
SOUND CHATTER CHATTER
[045-4]
Reader: Nanishi owaba—
(If your name is true)
[045-5]
Chihaya: Chaaaaa!
SOUND THUD
Taichi: Wah!
[046-1]
Taichi: Wh. . .what's with you. . .?
You're not catching a grasshopper!
Teacher: [You can't use both hands.]
Chihaya: Heh heh heh heh heh. . .
[046-2]
~Arata: You probably have a knack for karuta.
Chihaya: When I played with Wataya-kun,
Caption: Upper phrase
Card: Se wo hayami
Iwa ni sekaruru
Takigawa no.

(Though a swift stream is
Divided by a boulder
In its headlong flow)
Caption: Lower phrase
Card: Warete mo sue ni
Awan to zo omou

(Though divided, on it rushes,
And at last unites again.)
Chihaya: I just listened for the first syllable of the upper phrase and prepared myself to strike.
[046-3]
Chihaya: In other words. . .
[046-4]
Chihaya: Prepare yourself to just remember a few syllables from the upper phrase.
[What was the upper phrase for that poem?]
[I know I've seen it. What is it?]
Caption: [Prepared]
Chihaya: The meaning of the poem doesn't matter!
[046-5]
Chihaya: And for the cards I don't remember at all—
Taichi: Ah!
[046-6]
Chihaya: I'll look at where Taichi's going,
Chaaaa!
and scatter 5 or 6 cards (at random).
[047-1]
Taichi: No fair, Chihaya!
[You hit a bunch of cards!]
Teacher: It's not against the rules.
As long as the card in play gets hit.
Chihaya: Heh heh heh heh heh. . .
[047-2]
Teacher: What the?
That girl's karuta is funny.
[Ahahahaha!]
Kids: . . .
[047-3]
Reader: Kimi ga tame—
(It is for your sake)
Taichi: Haru no no ni idete
Wakana tsumu
Waga koromode ni
Yuki wa furi tsutsu

(That I walk the fields in spring,
Gathering green herbs,
While my garment's hanging sleeves
Are speckled with falling snow.)

(0.5 seconds)
Where is it?
[047-4]
Chihaya: I won't lose.
Concentrate on Taichi's movements!!
I'm going to win!!
[047-5]
Arata: Ayase-san is pushing back.
Mashima is smart,
but her strategy and reflexes are unusually good.
[047-6]
Someone: Chihaya just needs one more card!
[047-7]
Chihaya: But all the rest are cards I don't know!
SOUND GONG
Chihaya: [I should have studied.]
[048-3]
~Arata: I can already see it
as “Chihaya.”
[048-4]
~Arata: That's how it looks to me.
[048-5]
Card: Chihaya
[048-6]
Chihaya: Ahhh.
This. . .
This is. . .
[049-1]
Reader: Chihayaburu—
(Even when the gods)
Chihaya: Karuta vision!
[049-2]
Girl: She got it!
[049-3]
Arata: She did it!
[049-4]
Teacher: Ayase-san, 6th grade, class 1, is the winner!
SOUND WAAAA!
Chihaya: Phew. . .
[050-1]
Taichi: Shit!
SOUND SLAM
[050-3]
Chihaya: It was really fun
playing with you, Taichi.
Karuta is fun, isn't it?
[050-4]
Chihaya: It wouldn't have been like this if you were playing Wataya-kun.
He's going to become a Master.
[050-6]
Arata: Then Ayase-san,
you'll be the Queen.
[051-1]
Chihaya: . . .
The Queen?
When it comes to karuta,
[051-2]
Chihaya: Best in Japan. . .
means best in the world.
